This certificate is designed to provide professional knowledge courses for those with occupation-specific knowledge and skills. With three tracks (teaching, CTE certification, and professional development) the courses you will take are geared to promote professionalism and continual growth and development in the field of career and technical education.

  • To receive an undergraduate certificate (at least 15 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0.

    Please be aware that federal financial aid is not available for some certificates if the certificate is pursued and completed as a stand-alone certificate (i.e., not completed concurrently with a degree program). See the "Details" tab for additional information.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of the Certificate in Career and Technical Education (CTE) is to provide professional knowledge courses for those with occupation-specific knowledge and skills. With three tracks (teaching, career and technical education certification, and professional development) the courses in this program are geared to promote professionalism and continual growth and development in the field of CTE. It is ideal for those who are seeking to enter/have recently entered the field of CTE, need to complete CTE coursework for teaching qualifications, or desire to augment their professional knowledge related to the field of CTE. The certificate program combines fundamental CTE theory with professional knowledge for:

  • Developing and delivering occupational training in a variety of educational settings
  • Professional advancement in career and technical education careers; and/or meeting certification requirements from the student’s state of residence.
Certificate completers will be career-ready for CTE educator positions in their occupational area in a variety of educational settings (secondary, post-secondary/community college, business, and industry). For those already employed in the field, completion of this certificate supports professional growth with opportunities for advancement in their fields.


All completers will have the knowledge and ability to assume a role for CTE within society. Completers of the teaching track will additionally have the knowledge and ability to plan, develop, deliver, and assess instruction in an occupationally specific area. Completers of the certification track will align their learning experiences with certification requirements for their state of residence. Completers of the professional development track will develop knowledge and skills in self-identified areas of need.

Student Learning Outcomes

Core Career and Technical Education Outcomes
  • Examine career and technical education from historical, political, social, and economic perspectives and identify considerations and consequences that impact communities and their work in the profession.
  • Analyze the role of CTE in American society and its relationship in preparing a skilled workforce for a market economy.
  • Differentiate the functional and philosophical structure and contexts of CTE models at the local and national levels through comparison and analysis.
  • Effectively advocate the need and role of CTE to a stakeholder audience.
Teaching Track Outcomes
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan, develop, deliver, and assess CTE program instruction using proven frameworks that address the needs of all learners and employ instructional technology effectively.
Certification Track Outcomes
  • Complete requirements for state CTE certification in accordance with requirements from the student’s state of residence.
Professional Development Track Outcomes
  • Create an action plan to reach 3 - 5-year career goals based on data from self-assessment of professional knowledge and complete courses that address the goals and objectives from the action plan.

Certificate Requirements
  • Take the following 15 units with a Grade of "C" or better in each course and a minimum GPA of 2.5:

    • CTE 300 (3 units)
      • CTE 300 is a pre/co-requisite for some CTE courses and should be taken first.
    • CTE Professional Courses (12 units)
      • Chosen with your advisor
  • This certificate may be pursued and completed concurrently with a degree program or as a stand-alone certificate. Federal financial aid cannot be used if the certificate is completed as a stand-alone certificate.
