How is the Chicano and Latino population portrayed in popular culture, and why is it important to learn about cultural differences? To gain a deeper understanding of cultural representations, learn from faculty who specialize in literature, queer studies, Chicana feminist theory, communication and media studies, digital humanities and media production.

The BA program in transborder Chicana/o and Latina/o studies focuses on the cultural, social, political, economic, historical, health-related and artistic experiences of Mexican-origin, Chicano and Latino populations in the United States and the U.S.--Mexico transborder region.
In the media and expressive culture concentration, students focus their study on the cultures of Latino communities. Students learn about the cultural diversity of Chicano, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central American and other Latino populations in the United States and their contributions to the arts by analyzing:
- film and the media
- history
- literature (novels, short stories, poetry)
- performance
- visual art

Concurrent program options▲
Students pursuing concurrent degrees (also known as a “double major”) earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. Working with their academic advisors, students can create their own concurrent degree combination. Some combinations are not possible due to high levels of overlap in curriculum.

allows students to obtain both a bachelor's and master's degree in as little as five years. It is offered as an
accelerated bachelor's plus master's degree with:
Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master’s during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.

Transfer students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 from a transfer institution.

Global experience
Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the homelands of the Chicano and Latino cultures they are studying. Students can deepen their understanding of transborder influences and gain a deeper appreciation of transborder media and expression while enhancing their resumes with heightened cultural competency, critical thinking and communication skills. Each of the more than 300 Global Education program options provides an opportunity for students to develop a valuable skill set that can give them an advantage in their career and personal enrichment. Whether in a foreign country, in the U.S. or online, Global Education programs encourage students to build communication skills, challenge them to adapt and persevere, expose them to differences across the world and increase their ability to work with diverse groups of people.
The media and expressive culture concentration equips students with analytical and communication skills vital to the pursuit of graduate work and various career paths, including:
- the arts
- education (administration and teaching)
- film and media
- law
- local, state and national government agencies
- nonprofit organizations
- public policy and administration
- social work
What are accelerated programs?
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
3 year programs
These programs allow students to fast-track their studies after admission and earn a bachelor's degree in three years or fewer while participating in the same high-quality educational experience of a 4-year option. Students should talk to their academic advisor to get started.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).

Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
What are joint programs?
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.

What is the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)?
The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) is a program in which residents of western states (other than Arizona) may be eligible for reduced nonresident tuition. See more information and eligibility requirements on the

Students pursuing concurrent degrees earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. Accelerated bachelor's plus master's degree programs are designed for high-achieving undergraduate students who want the opportunity to share undergraduate coursework with graduate coursework to accelerate completion of their master's degree. These programs feature the same high-quality curriculum taught by ASU's world-renowned faculty.

A rolling deadline means that applications will continue to be reviewed on a regular basis until the semester begins. International students should be mindful of visa deadlines to ensure there is time to produce necessary visa documents. Applicants are encouraged to complete and submit application materials as soon as possible for consideration.
A final deadline means that all applications and application materials must be received by Graduate Admissions by the deadline date. Applications that are incomplete may not be considered after the final deadline. Applications that are submitted past the final deadline may not be considered.
A priority deadline means that applications submitted and completed before the priority deadline will receive priority consideration. Applications submitted after the priority deadlines will be reviewed in the order in which they were completed and on a space available basis. An application is complete after all materials are received by Graduate Admissions.
This program may be eligible for an Optional Practical Training extension for up to 36 months. This OPT work authorization term may help international students gain skills and experience in the U.S.Those interested in an OPT extension should review ASU degrees that qualify for the STEM-OPT extension at ASU's International Students and Scholars Center website. The OPT extension only applies to students on an F-1 visa and does not apply to students completing the degree through ASU Online.
