    **POSITION SUMMARY**

    Responsible for quality and productive microscopic examination and evaluation of gynecological and non-gynecological specimens, primarily for the diagnosis of malignant and pre-malignant conditions. This position may assist with fine needle aspiration collection and NGYN and FNA screening. Proficiency testing and continuing education are required for all cytotechnologists. This position is required to keep daily workload records in accordance with CLIA ’88.

    **CORE FUNCTIONS**

    1. Microscopically screens and evaluates conventional, ThinPrep and SurePath gynecologic specimens, maintaining a high level of quality in accordance with the established performance standards for cytotechnologists. Microscopically screens and evaluates all cytologic specimens with a level of productivity in accordance with the established performance standards for cytotechnologists.

    2. Participates in proficiency testing in accordance with the established performance standards for cytotechnologists.

    3. Obtains a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education annually, including monthly microscope sessions, in accordance with the established performance standards for cytotechnologists.

    4.Appropriately refers abnormal cases to pathologists for sign-out using established cytologic criteria. Maintains TIS Full Screen rate in accordance with the established performance standards for cytotechnologists.

    5. Maintains department performance indicators of corrective action, EC Absent rate and ASCUS:SIL ratio in accordance with the established performance standards for cytotechnologists.

    **MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**

    + Completion of cytotechnology program from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) school. ASCP certification or eligible required.

    + Students may be hired at the job title equivalent of a future Cytotechnologist under the following conditions: Student is enrolled in a cytotechnology program at CAAHEP school with a completion date within six (6) months of hire. Student must pass the ASCP Board Certification at the first opportunity but no later than 3 months after program completion

    Identification and rendering of diagnostic evaluation of cytological specimens (gynecological and non-gynecological) for abnormality, evidence of malignancy, or other diseases. Signs out negative gynecological specimen reports. Serves as a member of the FNA team providing on site adequacy evaluation of endoscopic ultrasound-directed and radiology technique-based fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures. Cytotechnologists also provide the support for ancillary techniques and related interpretations. May perform quality control activities. May participate in additional activities in the lab that may include but are not limited to: Provide technical advice and coverage to the preparation and processing area during times of short staffing in that area.
