Whole Life Engineering (WLE) is responsible for ensuring our products are Safe, Reliable, Maintainable and delivered on time. WLE consists of multiple disciplines that support engineering, our program offices and our customers. Our WLE disciplines participate in the total life cycle of our products from conception to deactivation. Our focus area is product support, including the following disciplines: Reliability System Safety and Supportability.
System Safety Engineering is a department of Whole Life Engineering. Our team sets system requirements, analyzes the design, assesses test data, reviews operating and maintenance manuals, and assess risk by way of hazard analyses, and software and firmware safety programs. System safety provides assurance to our employees, the customer and end users that our products safely perform their required mission functions throughout their lifecycle while meeting overall cost and schedule requirements.

We methodically analyze missile and defense programs at a component and system level to identify, eliminate or mitigate hazards, As a member of the team, you’ll collaborate across departments, including Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Supply Chain, Operations, Test & Integration and Production.
As a Systems Safety Engineer, you’ll analyze engineering hardware, electrical drawings and schematics assessing for fault tolerance, latent hazards and safety requirements compliance. You’ll work with test and tactical operating and maintenance procedures to assure the proper administrative controls are in place to minimize the effects of identified hazards. You’ll also work across all integrated product teams and lines to properly eliminate hazards or provide effective controls. In addition, you’ll work with Program Management and government approval authorities from program startup until safety approvals are obtained, and then through production, demilitarization and disposal activities.
Responsibilities to Anticipate:
Key Responsibilities will include:
+ Performing MIL-STD-882E System Safety Program engineering tasks and analyses, or customer’s approved equivalent
+ Applying technical knowledge to meet company and customer needs and requirements
+ Interpreting system requirements, customer specifications and military standards to develop appropriate safety requirements for hazard mitigation or elimination
+ System Design Analyses (fault tree, hazard, sneak circuit and software/firmware safety programs)
+ Safety Requirements Verification (test, demonstration, Inspection, Analysis)
+ Preparing internal and customer reports
+ Collaborating with multiple disciplines to gain a full understanding of product architecture and design
Some U.S. domestic travel may be required.
An advanced degree in a related field and minimum 3 years' experience may be considered for this role. A PhD can account for 5 years of experience as required for this role.
Qualifications You Must Have:
Education: BS in a STEM discipline or BA in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or Chemistry
+ 5+ years’ experience in System Safety Engineering, Firmware Design, Software Coding or Engineering, Software / Firmware Safety Engineering, or equivalent (e.g. Flight, Automotive, or Medical Device safety engineering)
+ The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. US citizenship is required as only US citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Qualifications We Value:
+ Experience conducting: Subsystem Hazard Analyses, Bent Pin Analysis, Functional Hazard Analyses, Fault Tree Analyses, Inhibit or other Fault Tolerant Analyses, and/or Software or Firmware Safety Programs
+ Experience reading, reviewing, and understanding technical engineering drawings
+ Presenting technical information at design reviews
+ Experience with DoD Systems Safety standard practice MIL-STD-882E
+ Experience with software and firmware development including: C, C++, Java, VHDL, and assembly languages
+ Experience with application of Emotional Intelligence® concepts, techniques
+ Self-starter with the ability to independently pursue technical information and problem solve
+ Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment
+ M.S. in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM); Desired: ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard
